The Albanian currency

 Lek (plural Leke) is the currency unit of Albania. Its ISO 4217 code is ALL. Historically was divided into 100 quintares, but now this division does not actually exist. It was introduced in 1926, during the reign of Ahmet Zogu. Its name derives from the popular abbreviation of Alexander the Great, the Leka Madhava.

Coins

The coins have different designs, but all bear the inscription “Republika e Shqipërisë” (Republic of Albania) and the year of production. The drawings are:

  • 5 Leke: The eagle of the flag of Albania
  • 10 Leke: The castle of Berat
  • 20 Leke: Ship Liburniana
  • 50 Leke: Portrait of the Illyrian King Gent
  • 100 Leke: Portrait of the Illyrian Queen Teuta
