Albania (official name: Republic of Albania, Albanian: Republika e Shqipërisë) – also known Shqipëria (literally: Land of the Eagles) – is a state of the Balkan Peninsula in southeastern Europe. Bordered to the north-west by Montenegro, to the north-east by Kosovo and Macedonia, to the east and south by Greece, its coastline facing the Adriatic Sea (the Strait of Otranto) and the Ionian Sea.

Albania is a parliamentary republic, the current Prime Minister is Sali Berisha (since 2005), the President is Bamir Topi (since 2007). The country’s official language is Albanian. Albanian history and culture are fascinating. Butrinti, one of the archaeological wonders of the world – UNESCO World Heritage site – in the south of Albania offers a glimpse of Mediterranean civilization of the Bronze Age through the Greek culture and Roman, Byzantine, Venetian and Ottoman periods of domination – on top of a cliff where you see Corfu.
